“Full-frame” and “retrofit” are useful starting terms, but neither should be selected from a generic online checklist. The condition of the existing opening, the frame, interior and exterior finishes, desired glass area, and the scope of the renovation all matter.

Begin with the existing opening

Take clear photos from the interior and exterior. Include the frame, sill, trim, nearby finishes, and any areas of concern. Note the room use, visible drafts or condensation, whether the style is changing, and whether adjacent work is planned.

Natural Resources Canada notes that some projects are better suited to total window and frame replacement, while inserts can be appropriate when existing frames are in good condition. That is a project-specific assessment, not a universal rule. Heritage, exterior finish, glass size, and renovation objectives can all change the right approach.

Ask for the trade-offs in plain language

  • What will be inspected or confirmed before the scope is finalized?
  • How will the option affect visible glass, trim, and exterior details?
  • What finishing work is included or outside the scope?
  • What product and installation decisions remain after the opening is reviewed?

Avoid deciding only from a price comparison that uses different scopes. A useful quote conversation names the opening, system direction, and next confirmation needed.

To begin, send photos and rough measurements through the window replacement page. The Better View team can help identify the most useful next discussion for the home.
